Pilates Classes

At Core Capable Pilates, we offer Pilates classes for all physical conditions. Here is some information to help you know what Pilates is and how it can help you.
What Is PILATES?
Invented by the German born Joseph Pilates in the first half of the 20th Century, Pilates is an exercise method that can benefit us all, it can be practiced as a standalone form of exercise or to complement other physical activities. Pilates brings with it many benefits, it lengthens and strengthens your muscles and by doing so can help improve your posture, it works on balance and body awareness, and it releases tension and stress from overused muscles. It keeps your joints mobile and increases flexibility. Additionally to all this it’s a period of concentration and relaxation allowing you to temporarily leave the rest of the world behind.
What’s different about Modern Pilates?
Whilst just as effective, Modern Pilates is an up-to-date adaptation to the classical Joseph Pilates moves, which were initially designed for dancers and gymnasts. Modern Pilates focuses more on relieving symptoms caused by today’s lifestyles which may affect our posture and movements, such as sitting at a computer for several hours a day or spending many hours driving. Modern Pilates will aim to help correct some of the muscle imbalances and poor postural habits which can result from today’s modern lifestyles.
Who should come to class?
Whether you are a keen sportsperson looking to enhance your performance, someone in need of some gentle rehabilitation exercise, or you haven’t moved your body for years, the advantages of Pilates can benefit everyone. The majority of class attendees are there because they enjoy the gentle but effective exercises and many start to feel the benefits within a short time of starting classes. Unfortunately as a standalone exercise Pilates will not help with weight loss.
What should you expect?
Classes are gentle but effective, and are designed to accommodate both healthy individuals as well as those with physical health issues. A pre-exercise questionnaire prior to your first class allows the instructor to be mindful of any issues and offer alternative moves when necessary. Classes are mat based, so all you need to bring is a mat and a small hand towel. All other equipment will be supplied. Mixed Ability Classes are limited to 12 people so that the instructor has time to offer personal hands-on advice during the class.
